Grammar Mistakes

Most CAE students do not make obvious, basic mistakes like your/you’re or its/it’s. Nevertheless they do struggle with things such as:

Relative clauses

You will need to learn the essential difference between defining and non-defining relative clauses. Your non-defining clauses need commas, while your defining clauses should never have commas.

I experienced lunch with my grandfather, who is 90 yrs old. (the half that is second of sentence tells you more info on my grandfather. It’s bonus information, generally there has to be a comma.)

Keep in mind that non-defining pronouns cannot be changed to ‘that’, so you should never write a comma followed by ‘that’. (it is especially an issue for German speakers because in German you HAVE to use a comma before ‘that’.)

Gerund infinitive that is vs

Gerund means the form that is-ing of verb. This really is a part that is tricky of since there are not any rules along with to learn every verb one at a time. English! Argh! Anyway, make sure you realize these structures:

I used to reside in China (= I lived in China).

I’m used to hearing German (= hearing German is normal for me).

I look forward to meeting you.

I stopped smoking (= I quit).

I stopped to smoke (= I stopped the thing I was doing because i needed to have a cigarette).

I would recommend buying new computer equipment. (Suggest and advise may also be followed closely by gerunds.)

So very hard! So many prepositions! So many mistakes! Just learn as much as you can easily and don’t forget, every single student who has ever taken the CAE exam has struggled with prepositions. It’s not just you!


If I get the work I will relocate to Zurich. (The speaker is confident.)

If i acquired the task i might proceed to Zurich. (The speaker is certainly not confident.)

I would have moved to Zurich if I had got the job. (But the speaker didn’t have the job and didn’t go on to Zurich.)

Other Mistakes

Not taking chances

A lot of students always write the same, safe, things they always write. To understand advanced vocabulary and structures you must use advanced vocabulary and structures!

Being boring

It really is hard enough to produce a piece that is well-structured of with good vocabulary that fits the information. But remember that the examiners read hundreds and a huge selection of essays and most of those are very boring! If you make yours interesting (though the style, unexpectedly good vocabulary, maybe even a joke or two) the examiners will be really happy and you will certainly be REWARDED.

Q – Do I have to use British spelling?

A – No, it doesn’t matter. But if you employ American spelling, be consistent through your writing.

Q – How important is spelling and punctuation?

A – It is pretty important – in the event that you make a trivial mistake it won’t be an issue. Then you will lose points if the mistake stops the reader from understanding what you mean.

Q – How important is the expressed word count? What are the results if I write too words that are many?

Q – i am aware i must use complex sentences to obtain a good grade, but i am concerned about making mistakes. Is it easier to have a text that is simple no mistakes?

A – Cambridge says that students who make mistakes while attempting to use complex structures will get credit for trying (so long as the mistake doesn’t stop your reader from understanding).

Q – My handwriting is terrible! No-one can see clearly! Can I lose points?

A – No. Your handwriting is not too important. Just make sure it can be read. Also, you should not rewrite your text (and you do not have time for you rewrite it) – whether it’s got plenty of bits crossed out, don’t be concerned. Every student’s writing looks exactly the same!
